Cheley Tackett: Music

Jerusalem Ridge

(Cheley Tackett)
Bluebirds sang from the bluegrass in the dewy Sunday morn
We stood silent by the window
Granny said they were blessed creatures from the Lord
And good omen to our christian home

And they sang from high atop Jerusalem Ridge
With Kentucky's fair Rosine for their view
Where the wind carries the song of a pearl mandolin
To yonder's palest shade of wild blue
Unto yonder's palest shade of wild blue

Grandaddy gave the sermon for the twilight service
Spoke of Jesus and John the Baptist
Then called all souls to redemption and we lifted our voices
As sunlight struggled through the stained glass

And we sang from high atop Jerusalem Ridge
With Kentucky's fair Rosine for their view
Where the wind carries the song of an old gospel hymn
To yonder's palest shade of wild blue
Unto yonder's palest shade of wild blue

We laid Grandaddy to rest 'neath the chinaberry tree
Granny went to God near two years later
With bluebirds painted on the pinebox to join the melody
The angels sang as they took her

Singin' How Great Thou Art, The Old Rugged Cross,
Blue Moon of Kentucky keep on shinin', and Amazing Grace

From high atop Jerusalem Ridge
With Kentucky's fair Rosine for their view
Where the wind carries the song of a pearl mandolin
To yonder's palest shade of wild blue
Unto yonder's palest shade of wild blue
